The Great Wildebeest Migration
This is perhaps one of the most spectacular sights in the world and therefore has become most peoples' hoped for sighting on safari.
Contrary to popular belief it is not just the Wildebeest that follow a migratory circuit around the Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area and the Massai Mara, but Zebra are there in their thousands too. Predators follow, as too do some of the smaller Antelope like the Thompson Gazelle. We have also seen Topi crossing the Mara River as well.
This spectacular sight also brings the crowds, so you can't expect not to see other vehicles and if you want the very best locations you really do need to book early, as far as 9 - 12 months in advance. Many of the camps are mobile tented camps, and follow the migration so these can be expensive and any permanent lodges are at peak season prices.

The migration follows rain patterns and although we can give a rough guide as to where to find them and when, no sighting can be guaranteed. It has been known for as many as a million animals to literally disappear overnight.
December - March - the Wildebeest tend to stay put around the Ndutu area, the lower corner of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation area. This is the time they give birth to their young. It is a lovely time to see all the baby and young animals but predators are in abundance and of course many of the young do loose their life.
June to about mid July one usually expect to find the migration around the Seronera,- the centre of Serengeti. From there they move up to the Grumeti River, through the Serengeti Reserves and into the Maasi Mara.
August and September are really the only time when the majority of wildebeest can be seen in Kenya, crossing into the Mara Triangle and back again.
October they can be seen crossing back into Tanzania and a suberb viewing is at Kogatende and then they move down via Lobo through the Ngorongoro area to Ndutu to start the cycle again.
This can or course only be used as a guide as weather patterns change and it has been known for the animals to go around in circles and to be a month or so out, but give yourself time, I recommend a minimum of 3 - 4 nights in Serengeti in a couple of locations and our expert guides should get you a glimpse of this spectacular sight.
