4 nights Rhino Lodge
This new budget lodge opened in November 2007 is ideal to base oneself for this safari. It is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area a few hundred metres from the crater rim in lush vegetation. There are 24 rooms each for 2 people, with room for an optional 3rd bed. Simply furnished all rooms have en-suite bathrooms with hot shower and a large veranda.
Day 1 - Lake Manyara National park - 09.00 flight
Fly from Dar es Salaam to Arusha meet & greet safari driver guide and drive to Lake Manyara National Park for picnic lunch. Game drive in this small but pretty park, dominated by impressive Baobab Trees. Hippos, Flamingos and Pelicans are often seen along the lakeshore. Elephants are present and with luck you might see Manyaras’ famous tree-climbing lions.
Then drive up to the top of the Great Rift Valley with spectacular views of Lake Manyara below and on to Ngorongoro.
Overnight Rhino Lodge, full board.
Day 2 - Ngorongoro Crater
A very early start is recommended for your full day game drive in the crater as the ‘early bird’ has the potential to see some nocturnal wildlife before it settles down to sleep. Some 30,000 mammals of many different species including Black Rhino, Cheetah, and Jackal etc live in the crater. Bird life is also prolific in particular large numbers of Flamingo. This is your best chance of seeing the ‘Big 5’ in one day.
Overnight Rhino Lodge, full board.
Day 3 - Ngorongoro Crater Rim
After breakfast visit a traditional Maasai Boma and hear about the history of their culture and way of life. After lunch you will be taken on a Massai guided walk around the crater rim.
Overnight Rhino Lodge, full board.
Day 4 - Ndutu Area
Game drive down to the Ndutu Area via Olduvai Gorge. Olduvai is regarded as the cradle of mankind and is a site of archaeological findings, where fossil remains of our hominid ancestors dating back to 3.5 million years ago have been discovered.
The Ndutu area lies south east of the Serengeti National Park, just outside the boundary. Lake Ndutu, is fringed by acacia woodland and the lake is a soda lake home to many birds including Flamingos. During the 4 months of December through to March, large herds of Wildebeest may be seen as 90% of female wildebeest give birth to their calves in this area. These are easy pickings for the larger prey animals and Lion, Leopard, Cheetah and Hyeana are often seen here. There are also many Zebra, Giraffe, Thompson Gazelle and Impala always present.
Overnight Rhino Lodge, full board.
Day 5 - Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar - Flight 12.15
